Free Background Check Tools - Nov. 10, 2010

By Barbara Haubrich-Hass, ACP/CAS

If the liability facts are in dispute, the case may boil down to the credibility of the parties and witnesses.  A client is not always truthful about their past.  Below are some suggestions on how you can research on the Internet background information:

California Courts:  Check the county court website to search for any civil or criminal cases, including any former names or aliases.  This search should include all counties where the party or witness has resided in the past.

Search Engine Name Search:  It is always interesting what you come up with when you do a general search by the name of an individual.

Megan’s Law:  Find out if an individual is a registered sex offender.

Zaba Search:  A free people search and background information website.

People Search:  A free address locator.

Social networking sites, such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and LinkedIn:  When people are involved in an incident, they immediately go to their social networking site to tell everyone about what happened, and even post photos.   I have even located parties and witnesses by searching these sites.
